The difference is the virtual-machine count
Windows Server Standard and Datacenter both install on the same AMD EPYC 7543P. That processor has 32 cores and 64 threads, runs at 2.8–3.7 GHz, and carries 256MB of L3 cache. Memory is DDR4-3200 ECC RDIMM, in a 128GB machine or a 256GB machine. Neither Windows edition changes the core count, and neither turns 128GB into 256GB.
Microsoft’s published edition limits allow Standard, per license, to run 2 Windows Server virtual machines plus 1 Hyper-V host. Datacenter may run an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines plus 1 Hyper-V host. “Per license” means the physical cores are covered for that edition. The $16 and $26 on this site are the monthly fee for the operating-system tier. That fee joins the machine’s monthly rent, and the term is the monthly rent times the number of months. It is not Microsoft’s per-core retail price, and one order cannot buy two or three copies of Standard to raise the count.
| Item | Standard | Datacenter |
|---|---|---|
| Added per month | $16 | $26 |
| Windows Server virtual machines | 2 | No set limit |
| Hyper-V host | 1 | 1 |
| Storage Replica | 1 partnership, 1 volume up to 2TB | That volume cap does not apply |
| Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking, shielded virtual machines | Not included | Included |
The 2TB in the Storage Replica row is Microsoft’s limit on a Standard Storage Replica volume. It has nothing to do with the disks on this machine. The machine comes with two 1TB NVMe drives, each direct-attached, with no hardware RAID. Usable capacity is counted as 2TB. An added 2TB NVMe is $84 a month, up to two drives, still direct-attached, and it does not join a hardware array. Choosing Datacenter does not fold those drives into one hardware array.
How the fee enters the bill
The operating-system add-on joins the monthly rent, and the term is prepaid. The amount due is monthly rent times the months. Monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual terms carry no discount. There is no setup fee and no contract.
The 128GB machine is $455 a month. With only Standard added, bandwidth left at the default 250M, no extra disk, and no extra IPv4, the monthly rent is $471. The quarterly amount is $1,413, the semiannual amount is $2,826, and the annual amount is $5,652. The same configuration on Datacenter is $481 a month, and $1,443 for the quarter.
The 256GB machine is $612 a month. With only the operating-system tier added, Standard is $628 a month and Datacenter is $638. Memory is chosen when the order is placed. Moving from Standard to Datacenter leaves the memory at 128GB or 256GB.
Disks, bandwidth, and addresses are priced apart from the operating-system tier, then multiplied by the months. Each 2TB NVMe is $84 a month. Bandwidth is $0 at 250M, $248 a month at 1G, and $747 a month at 2G. All three are unmetered. One IPv4 is already included. Each extra address is $2 a month, up to 255 more. Another disk, a higher port, or another address does not turn Standard’s two virtual machines into an unlimited count.
One Windows server takes Standard
When the workload is this one Windows system — a site, a database, finance software, or an internal application installed on the host, with administrators maintaining it over Remote Desktop — the edition is Standard. The $16 covers that system and a right to at most two Windows Server virtual machines. If the host is the only system and no Windows Server virtual machine is created, the extra room in Datacenter stays unused.
The year is one of 2019, 2022, or 2025. The interface language is one of Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or English. Windows Server 2022 Standard can be Simplified Chinese. Windows Server 2025 Standard can be English. Year and language do not move the line between two virtual machines and an unlimited count. After installation, the version string in system information should show both the edition and the year.
More than two virtual machines takes Datacenter
When the host runs Hyper-V and the guests are Windows Server, the edition follows the guest count. Two or fewer fit Standard. A third Windows Server guest is past Standard’s published limit, so the physical machine’s system is Datacenter, at $26 a month.
A configuration that can be checked directly: the 128GB machine, Windows Server 2022, the host used only as Hyper-V, and four Windows Server guests running separate workloads. Four is past two, so the edition is Datacenter. Monthly rent is $455 plus $26, which is $481 on the default port, then times the months in the term. That $26 raises the number of Windows Server instances the edition allows. The 32 cores and 128GB of memory stay as they are. Whether four guests can run at full load still depends on the memory, virtual processors, and disks given to each one.
A Linux guest does not consume those two Windows Server places. If the machine instead runs Proxmox VE 8, Proxmox VE 9, or another free system, the monthly fee is the free-system fee. It does not add $16 or $26. The Datacenter tier on the configuration page applies only when the machine’s own system is Windows Datacenter. Windows inside a Proxmox guest needs its own Microsoft licensing. The $26 on the price list does not cover those guests by itself.
Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking, and shielded virtual machines sit on the Datacenter feature list. A single business system on one machine rarely uses them. They matter when one host will run many Windows Server virtual machines, or when Storage Spaces Direct is actually required. Storage Spaces Direct is an operating-system feature. It does not change the direct-attached disks on this machine.
Remote Desktop users are a separate count
After payment, this Windows system is reached with RDP. For administration, two remote management sessions can run at the same time. Those sessions are for installing, troubleshooting, and inspecting the system. They are a different matter from many business users each signing in to a desktop of their own.
More people, each with a desktop at the same time, need Microsoft Remote Desktop Services user licenses in addition. Neither the Standard fee nor the Datacenter fee rises with the number of simultaneous sign-ins, and the configuration page has no Remote Desktop Services license line. Datacenter removes the limit on Windows Server virtual machines. The number of simultaneous desktops is still counted under Remote Desktop Services licensing.
Before choosing an edition, write the two numbers separately: how many Windows Server virtual machines, and how many business users need a desktop at once. The first number chooses $16 or $26. The second number is outside both monthly fees.
What to select on the order
The order is memory first, 128GB or 256GB, then extra disks, bandwidth, and extra addresses, then one system from the list. Windows occupies that single system slot. Windows Server 2022 Standard does not also install Proxmox. Datacenter is still one of 2019, 2022, or 2025, and the language is still Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or English.
| How this machine is used | Edition |
|---|---|
| This one Windows system, maintained over RDP | Standard, $16 / month |
| One or two Windows Server guests on Hyper-V | Standard, $16 / month |
| Three or more Windows Server guests | Datacenter, $26 / month |
| Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking, or shielded virtual machines | Datacenter, $26 / month |
| Proxmox or another free system for virtualization | Free system, neither Windows fee |
The machine is deployed in Tokyo, Japan. The edition does not change the facility, and it does not change the split between SSH and RDP. The Windows system in this note is reached with RDP. A free Linux system is reached with SSH. The port rate is still chosen separately among 250M, 1G, and 2G.
Check the version string after installation
Read the version name
Open system information, or run
winver. The name should show Standard or Datacenter, and one of 2019, 2022, or 2025. The interface language should match the Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, or English chosen on the order.Count the Windows Server guests
With Hyper-V enabled, count the Windows Server guests. Standard stops at two. A third guest means this physical machine’s edition is Datacenter, rather than another $16 stacked on the same monthly fee.
Keep the desktop count separate
Treat simultaneous remote management sessions as two. When business users each need a desktop, count Remote Desktop Services licensing on its own. That count does not change the $10 between $16 and $26.
The check is the version string and the guest count. Memory remains the 128GB or 256GB of DDR4-3200 ECC RDIMM on the chosen machine. The disks remain two direct-attached NVMe drives, counted as 2TB usable, plus any data drives ordered separately. That hardware does not grow or shrink when the edition changes between Standard and Datacenter.
The system is one of the two Windows editions.
